Joel's Weekly Heads Up
By Pastor Joel
August 11, 2017

So last week you encountered a dreary, overwhelmed pastor saddened that he had reached his limit of "science and faith go together because all truth is God’s truth." I am frustrated that so much scientific evidence points toward a gentle geological change that results in snail fossils on mountaintops rather than worldwide flood lifting the shells. However, you also heard my evaluation that Dr. Andrew Snelling’s geological case for a worldwide flood, while rejected by many in the scientific community, seems plausible to this non-scientific guy. I’m saddened with the increasing portion of the Christian community who accepts Genesis 1-11 as largely myth due to scientific discoveries. I can accept an old earth, but I struggle deeply with Adam, Eve, and Noah as archetypes rather than historical figures. I realize that some Christians see it differently and hold to the same high view of scripture (see biologos.org). I’ve always tended to accept a simple interpretation of scripture. That’s growing more difficult with the growing complexities of scientific discovery.

One listener, sensing my frustration, mentioned that I forgot the fourth option when science and faith don’t seemingly align. “Wait for science to change its view again.” That helped me. Scientific theory is a moving target.

Sunday’s message is largely a testimony of a man who came to Christ through science. Some say that science trumps Christian faith. Sunday we learn that science can steer one toward the Creator.

Next week we’ll explore the Jonah story. Is a fish swallowing a man incompatible with science?

Continuing in our current sermon series on Sunday, "The Harmony of Christian Faith and Scientific Pursuit," we will study the story of Noah and the flood in several passages of Genesis. This story is extremely problematic for moderns on two fronts. The first is theological. How could God destroy all of humanity but for one family? If there is a God, how could he be so mean? The second has to do with modern evolutionary theory’s hypothesis of slow change versus the rapid change of a worldwide flood. Let’s have a look at Scripture and science regarding a world-wide flood. Remember, all truth is God’s truth. Where Bible and science seemingly collide, it’s a problem of interpretation on one side or the other, or perhaps on both.

NEW BLOG POSTED THIS MORNING – See the new blog entry from “JZ’s A to Z.” It’s written by Tom Kamp. When Greg Kelley of World Mission pinch hit preached at Pathway on June 25, Tom Kamp was shocked to see his former suitemate delivering the message. Tom hadn’t seen Greg since freshman year. Then Greg launched into a story how he didn’t know Christ when at Calvin College and no one had witnessed to him. . . . Tom picks it up from there in the blog post. You can read it at pathwaycrc.org under the “Resource” tab. On Sunday we celebrate the animal creation in the “Harmony of Christian Faith and Scientific Pursuit” series. The animal pictures provided are either of family pets or wild animals taken by some of you. Enjoy, and give praise to God for the splendor of the animals. Isn’t it wonderful to think of the animal creation giving praise to God at the return of Christ? Read of it in Revelation 5.

On Sunday I will continue in my current sermon series, “The Harmony of Christian Faith and Scientific Pursuit,” with a message titled, "God is Gracious, We are Valued," based on Genesis 1:26-31. Last week we saw clearly as we gazed into the starry sky that God is great, and we are very small---very, very, very small. This week we learn that while very small, God has chosen us to be very Important. We are His image bearers and stewards of His earth. He loves us, and knows us by name.

All are invited to HOPE COMMUNITY CHURCH'S third worship service THIS Sunday, July 9 at 4:00 p.m., using the facilities of the First Church of the Nazarene, 18210 Clark Rd, Lowell, Indiana. Please come early for an ice cream social at 3:00 p.m.!

FAITH AND ACTION will hold their SUMMER FEST on Saturday, July 15, 9:30 am - 1:00 pm. at Crete Church, located at 24755 S. Country Lane in Crete (across from Walt's Foods). Free activities include a touch-a-truck, car cruise, piston toss competition, bounce house, pony rides, smash-a-car, face painting, and much more! Grilled lunch items and fresh oliebollen will be available for purchase. Admission is free but all donations received will be used to benefit the programs Faith and Action offers to at-risk kids. Visit www.faithandactiononline.org for more information, to volunteer, or to pre-order oliebollen.

On June 11 we began a series on the harmony of science and Christian faith. All truth is God’s truth so whether we are learning about creation through scientific pursuit or learning about God or His world through the study of scripture, all knowledge is His. The problem comes in accurate interpretation of both the created order (general revelation) and the Bible (special revelation).

For this Sunday, we get humbled. In order to know God, we must humble ourselves and come to Him through Jesus Christ. Usually “to be humbled” in the Christian sense is to know our sin and shame and long for a cure, but another way to be humbled is to know God’s size and our lack thereof. Today we explore the stars, and realize that the science of astronomy shows distinctly God’s size and ours. It’s humbling, but will leave us in awe at the size of our maker. Our sermon this Sunday is titled, "God is GREAT, We are Small" and is based on Genesis 1:16, Deuteronomy 4:19, Psalm 8:3, Psalm 147:4, and Psalm 148.
