Joel's Weekly Heads Up
By Pastor Joel

Sunday we celebrate Ascension Day. Jesus died, rose, and then ascended to heaven where He rules over creation from His throne above! We’ll look at what practical implications this has for Christians. If you are not a Christian, please consider this message as a peek into what Christians believe, and why they live like they do. If Jesus reigns and rules, as Christians believe, then Christians can live their life with incredible purpose and confidence.

Next Sunday Pastor Siang Hup and I will be in Albany, New York on behalf of the Home Missions Committee to visit a Burmese congregation that wants to enter the CRC. A representative from the local classis will also participate. Mark Morris will bring the message.

SUMMER SERMON SERIES – This summer I will teach a series on how science and the Christian faith fit together. Some believe science takes precedence over scripture. For those, the Bible is more of a fairy tale that warms our hearts. Others believe it's scripture that takes precedence over science. For those, the Bible lays out an exact time table for creation and humanity. But what if the two fit nicely together and inform each other? What if one reveals God in a general creative way, and the other reveals Him in a special redemptive way? My science friends may feel free to pass along their perplexing questions at the intersection of Bible and science, and/or their observations about how the two fit well together.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND – Thank you to all the Mothers and Grandmothers of Pathway Church! We love you dearly and are grateful for all the many things you do for the children of this church. May God bless you during this special weekend!

This Sunday we will look at the Biblical example of the ideal woman as described in Proverbs 31. Many other women have been mentioned or described earlier in Proverbs. In one section, a dad instructs his son on some of the women he should avoid. In addition, dad advises his son to seek after a woman named wisdom. “Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. . . . . Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.” Now at the end of the book on wisdom, the ideal woman is held up as a model to a young son who has become a king. He’s counseled by his mom to seek this kind of woman. Let’s relish and long for this ideal! Prepare to be surprised over the earthly mom speaking the words of God who gives this advice:  “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” ~Proverbs 31:30-31

The Bible often uses beautiful images to convey spiritual truth. One of those images is an eagle. This Sunday we’ll explore the various eagle Bible verses and learn about God’s protection and testing found in Deuteronomy 32:10-11, Exodus 19:3-4 and Isaiah 40:27-31.

This coming Sunday will be a special day at Pathway as we have three young people taking their public stand for Jesus Christ! Join us afterward for a cake reception in the lobby.

This week’s message will take us to the Decapolis area of northern Israel where Jesus heals a man named Legion, so named because he was filled with a legion of demons. After his conversion, he wants to leave his pagan region of Decapolis to follow Jesus, but Jesus sends him home to be a witness. There is much here for our young people upon their profession of faith, and for us as we live in an increasingly pagan culture.

FAMILY NIGHT – This coming Wednesday, April 26. Dinner will be at 6:00 p.m. with Pink Night, Blue Night and Adult Programming starting at 6:45 p.m. This will be the last meeting of the church year. The Blue Night boys will meet to assemble model rockets and prepare them for launch. Launch day will be at a later date as yet to be determined. If you would like to participate, please contact Scott Balkema soon, (scottbalkema@pathwaycrc.org). Scott is asking for $10.00 per kit ordered. The adult programming topic will focus on parenting.
